"Started in 2002 and restructured in 2007, the Centre for Community Initiative (CCI) is a non-governmental, apolitical, and not-for-profit organization founded to deal with pressing societal issues and ultimately establish a better society through community initiative and participation for the welfare of society in general and to persons with disabilities (PwDs) in particular.
Centre for Community Initiative (CCI) observed UNAU Day (A Day of Siblings with Disabilities) on June 26, 2026 at the Auditorium of Gospel Centenary Hall, New Lamka. The programme celebrated the vital role of siblings, families, and communities in supporting persons with disabilities while promoting dignity, equality, and social inclusion.
The event was graced by Pu Krishna Kumar, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, Churachandpur, as the Chief Guest. In his address, he highlighted the Government's continued commitment to the welfare of persons with disabilities and emphasized that the Deputy Commissioner's Office remains accessible to support their needs.
As part of the annual observance, CCI presented Ginmalsawm Tonsing Award to students with disabilities who successfully completed their Class X and XII examinations. The award recognizes their perseverance, academic achievement, and commitment to education, inspiring other young persons with disabilities to pursue their goals with confidence.
A significant milestone during this year's programme was the presentation of Social Inclusion Award for the first time. The award recognizes communities and organizations that actively promote the inclusion, participation, and dignity of persons with disabilities. The inaugural recipients were ECA Mission Board, K. Salbung, and YPA Bungmual Unit, both honoured for their exemplary efforts in creating welcoming and inclusive communities.
The programme also featured a variety of cultural performances by students of The Malsawm Initiative (TMI). A particularly memorable moment was the heartfelt performance of Amazing Grace by Ms. Chingnunhoih Guite, a song dearly loved by late Master Ginmalsawm Tonsing.
CCI extends its heartfelt gratitude to the Chief Guest, award recipients, participants, partner organizations, families, and all those who attended the event. Their presence and support reaffirm the collective commitment to building a society where every person, regardless of ability, is respected, included, and given the opportunity to thrive.

As part of the ongoing preparations for the establishment of the Child Development Centre (CDC), Chandel, the outreach team conducted a series of visits to villages and institutions across the district to strengthen community engagement and build awareness about the centre's services.
The team visited Lamphou Pasna Village, Chandel Christian Village, Modi Village, Cheengkhu Village, Japhou Village, Thotchanram Village, Hnahringkhu, and Monsangpantha, where meetings were held with village chiefs, ASHA workers, and community members. These interactions focused on introducing the objectives of CDC Chandel and discussing the importance of early identification, intervention, and support for children with disabilities.
In addition, the team met with representatives from the One Stop Centre, Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS), Little One's Kindergarten, and St. Teresa Kids School. The visits provided an opportunity to establish partnerships, share information about the centre's services, and explore collaborative approaches to supporting children with disabilities and their families.
The outreach activities aimed to create greater awareness about the role of the Child Development Centre as a one-stop facility offering developmental, educational, therapeutic, and community-based support services. They also helped strengthen referral networks and encourage community participation in promoting inclusion and access to services.
Through these engagements, CDC Chandel continues to build meaningful partnerships with local institutions, frontline workers, and community leaders to ensure that children with disabilities receive timely support and opportunities to reach their full potential.

While students are enjoying their summer break, teachers at The Malsawm Initiative (TMI) are actively preparing for the upcoming academic year through a range of creative and educational activities.
During the break, teachers are developing learning materials, creating classroom resources, and organizing learning spaces to ensure that students return to an engaging, supportive, and inclusive environment. These preparations play an important role in enhancing the quality of teaching and learning while addressing the diverse needs of learners.
The dedication and creativity demonstrated by the teaching staff reflect TMI's commitment to providing meaningful educational experiences for every child. By investing time in planning and resource development, teachers help lay the foundation for a successful and productive school year.
At TMI, learning extends beyond the classroom, and the work that takes place behind the scenes is an essential part of creating opportunities for every learner to grow, participate, and thrive.
On 29 May 2026, Centre for Community Initiative (CCI) conducted a training session on Neurodiversity and Physical Disabilities at Malsawm Ability Resource Centre (MARC), Pearsonmun, Lamka. The programme was attended by parents enrolled in CCI’s Early Intervention and Home-Based Care Programme.
The training aimed to enhance parents’ understanding of neurodiversity and physical disabilities while equipping them with practical knowledge and strategies to support their children's development within the home environment. Through interactive discussions, learning activities, and the sharing of experiences, participants gained a deeper understanding of the unique needs and strengths of children with disabilities.
The session also highlighted the important role that families play in promoting the growth, independence, and overall well-being of their children. Parents were encouraged to apply evidence-based approaches and positive caregiving practices that foster inclusive and nurturing environments.
CCI remains committed to empowering parents and caregivers through knowledge and capacity-building initiatives. By strengthening family support systems, the organisation seeks to improve developmental outcomes for children with disabilities and promote greater inclusion within the community.
The training forms part of CCI’s ongoing efforts to ensure that families are equipped with the resources, skills, and confidence needed to support every child's journey toward reaching their full potential.
